Droney &#8217;79 as the recipient of the 2012 Connecticut Law Review Alumni Award.  Additionally, Jonathan C. Zellner will be receiving an award for <a href="http://connecticutlawreview.org/articles/artificial-grassroots-advocacy-and-the-constitutionality-of-legislative-identification-and-control-measures/" title="Artificial Grassroots Advocacy and the Constitutionality of Legislative Identification and Control Measures">his note</a>. </p>
<p>Judge Droney and Mr. Zellner will receive their awards at the Annual Law Review Alumni Awards Reception to be held on April 11th, 2012.  The reception will take place in Blumberg Hall from 5:30 pm &#8211; 8:00 pm.  Law Review members, faculty, and alumni are encouraged to attend.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="wp-image-530" src="http://connecticutlawreview.org/files/2012/03/Gertner_Nancy-lr.jpg" alt="" width="90" height="124" align="left" />On March 16, 2012, The Honorable Nancy Gertner gave an engaging and insightful speech about her experiences and struggles as a civil rights advocate.  Judge Gertner recounted a number of stories from her recently published autobiography, <em>In Defense of Women: Memoirs of an Unrepentant Advocate</em>.  Judge Gertner also signed copies of her book for those present.  The Connecticut Law Review thanks Day Pitney LLP for its generous support for this event.<em></em></p>
<p class="fac-extra">The Honorable Nancy Gertner is a graduate of Barnard College and Yale Law School where she was an editor on The Yale Law Journal. She received her M.A. in Political Science at Yale University. She has been an instructor at Yale Law School, teaching sentencing and comparative sentencing institutions, since 1998. She was appointed to the bench in 1994 by President William J. Clinton. In 2008 she received the Thurgood Marshall Award from the American Bar Association, Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities, only the second woman to receive it (Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the first). She became a Leadership Council Member of the International Center for Research on Women the same year.</p>
<p class="fac-extra" style="text-align: left">In 2010 she received the Morton A. Brody Distinguished Judicial Service Award. In 2011 she received the Massachusetts Bar Association&#8217;s Hennessey Award for judicial excellence, and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Brandeis University. She has been profiled on a number of occasions in the <em>Boston Globe</em>, the <em>ABA Journal</em>, <em>Boston Magazine</em>, and <em>The Wall Street Journal</em>. She has written and spoken widely on various legal issues and has appeared as a keynote speaker, panelist or lecturer concerning civil rights, civil liberties, employment, criminal justice and procedural issues, throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. Her autobiography, <em>In Defense of Women: Memoirs of an Unrepentant Advocate</em>, was released on April 26, 2011. Her book, <em>The Law of Juries</em>, co-authored with attorney Judith Mizner, was published in 1997 and updated in 2010. She has published articles, and chapters on sentencing, discrimination, and forensic evidence, women&#8217;s rights, and the jury system.  Judge Gertner currently serves as a Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On December 14, 2011, the Huffington Post cited Nina Rabin&#8217;s article in <a href="http://uconn.lawreviewnetwork.com/issue/vol-44-1/">Volume 44 &#8211; Issue 1</a> of the Connecticut Law Review.  Rabin&#8217;s article, titled <a title="Permalink to Disappearing Parents: Immigration Enforcement and the Child Welfare System" href="../articles/disappearing-parents-immigration-enforcement-and-the-child-welfare-system/" rel="bookmark">Disappearing Parents: Immigration Enforcement and the Child Welfare System,</a>  discusses the systemic failures of the federal immigration enforcement and state child welfare systems when immigrant parents in detention and deportation proceedings have children in state custody.   Like Rabin&#8217;s article, The Huffington Post article documents the difficulties that Rabin&#8217;s client, Ana, faced when her deportation from the United States separated her from her four young children.</p>

Droney, a former Notes and Comments Editor of the <em>Connecticut Law Review</em>, was nominated by President Obama for a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.</p>
<p>On November 28, 2011, the United States Senate unanimously approved the appointment of Judge Droney to the Second Circuit.  Droney previously served as a United States District Judge for Connecticut.</p>
<p>When Judge Droney was a member of the <em>Connecticut Law Review</em> he published a student Note in Volume 10, Issue 1.  The Note was entitled: &#8220;The Briefcase Caper, Standing and Due Process Exclusion: United States v. Payner, 434 F. Supp. 113 (N.D. Ohio 1977).&#8221;</p>
